Tafsiri aspect and discussion of the sciences of the Qur'an in the book of “Al-Mabsoot” by Imam Al-SaraKhsi

Abstract

As is well known, Imam Sarakhsi's book “Al-Mabusut” holds a high position in Hanafi jurisprudence. His book is referenced and trusted in fatwas and qaza, and it is one of the foundational texts of Hanafi jurisprudence. Imam Sarakhsi was a mujtahid, meaning that he had the ability to derive legal rulings from his own opinions, conclusions, and Quranic verses. Scholars have counted him among the imams of Hanafi jurisprudence.

Although Imam Sarakhsi's book “Al-Mabusut” is written on the subject of jurisprudence, it also contains a great deal of material related to the interpretation and sciences of the Qur'an. In this article, I have attempted to highlight this contribution to the field of Qur'anic Exegesis. I believe that it is important to recognize Imam Sarakhsi as not only a jurist and foundational figure in Hanafi jurisprudence, but also as a great commentator on the Qur'an.

One of the reasons for writing this article is that, apart from Imam Jassas(جصاص) and Imam Zamakhshari(زمخشري) very little material is available from Hanafi scholars on the subject of Qur'anic exegesis. This is despite the fact that Hanafi jurisprudence places great importance on the interpretation of Quranic verses. In this brief article, I have attempted to showcase the contributions of Imam Sarakhsi and of the Hanafi School in general, to the field of Qur'anic exegesis.
