Abstract

The subcontinent is a region where people from different regions and different cultures live. Therefore, it is a natural process for jurisprudence to differ in this region. There are different trends in the subcontinent. For example, the traditional school of thought, the Ahl al-Hadith school of thought, the trend of collective Ijtihad, Ijtihad in the light of the objectives of the Sharia, and the modern and innovative trend influenced by modernity. Work on all these trends in the subcontinent in the form of various books, articles and theses has been done in the past and is also being done in the present. From this review, it is clear that mujtahids worked hard on Islamic jurisprudence in Islamic history and paved the way for us to learn and practice. However, the modernists put reason against revelation. Nowadays there is an urgent need to work on modern trends in a systematic manner. By which the people, especially the young generation, can be brought closer to the Qur'an, Sunnah and Islamic jurisprudence, so that the objections of the modern mind about Islamic jurisprudence can be removed. Developing Islamic jurisprudence according to modern principles and theory of knowledge is the important need of the present age
